    Description

    A funny thing happened towards the end of World War I at two of the United States Mints.
    At the San Francisco Mint, coin production was in high gear. Somehow, a 1918 die was struck with a 1917 master hub while a second strike came from a 1918 hub. This created a visible 8 over 7 effect visible to the naked eye. The overstrike was not recognized as a variety for 20 years. Now it is one of the most collected varieties of the Standing Liberty Quarter.
    In the same year, at the Denver Mint, the rarest Buffalo Nickel was created when a Mint worker punched an "8" over the "7" on a reused 1917 die. This error was not discovered by collectors until 1931.
