1850 alabama geology @ michael tuomey IRON ORE BIRMINGHAM 1st Report; EX LIBRARY

$ 136.68

Availability: 100 in stock
  • All returns accepted: Returns Accepted
  • Theme: Cities & Towns
  • Item must be returned within: 14 Days
  • Condition: EX-LIBRARY bound in relatively recent, non-descript library buckram hardcover binding; not terribly marked up and not abused at all - in fact the interior text block is fine, tight and - except for the very occasional, small library stamp - clean. There was an 1850 Geological map as well but based on my 50 years experience selling rare Alabama books, I am 100% certain that the 1850 FIRST BIENNIAL REPORT and the 1850 MAP were published separately as there seemed to have been a delay in getting the finished map back from the New York Lithographers. (See comments about the FIRST MAP from my reference book "Birmingham Bound" in the 9th [final] scan). My book, BIRMINGHAM BOUND can be found for sale in my ebay store but it IS NOT included in this sale of the Tuomey REPORT.

(Because of advancing age and the problems that go with same, I'll be cutting back on the
number of items in my ebay store over the next few months - especially items that are
difficult to ship [like oversized pre ww1 sheet music and other oversized items] as well as inexpensive items that have been
listed for more than 2 years without much buyer interest. If you are watching such an
item in my store, you'd best buy it now before it's permanently removed).

ILLUSTRATED WITH LINE DRAWINGS throughout the text.
RARE? The late "Alabamiana" collector, Jim Sulzby, in a July 1966
    Alabama Review
article about his incomparable collection of vintage Alabama books & pamphlets, said that it took him over twenty-five years to find a copy of this book!
The very first DETAILED study on the Geology of Alabama and in many ways, the study responsible for later development of what would become the Birmingham mining and iron/steel producing district as Tuomey goes on and on (21 years before Birmingham was founded) about how plentiful coal, limestone and iron ore were in the greater Jefferson County area.
    It is pretty much LITERALLY
    the
    "foundation document" for Birmingham history!
Included, as item #1, in my reference book, BIRMINGHAM BOUND, as one of the 50 most important books on the history and development of Birmingham Alabama.
(Starting 18 March 2020 - though I'm social distancing myself and have absolutely no symptoms - I will rub [until dry] a fresh dollop of rubbing alcohol into my hands immediately before picking your items from my shelves and packing them - and again when I mail them).
